MCA meets AYP 2010 - '11

Mount Carmel Area School District is pleased to announce that AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education has been attained in all categories for the school year 2010-'11. This is the second consecutive year that the district has attained all benchmarks necessary to succesfully meet the requirement. We would like to congratulate all students, parents, teachers, and administrators for helping to make this achievement possible.

We continue the process of formative and summative assessment to improve the curriculum at MCASD and strive to best serve the needs of all students. This includes diligent examination of curriculum and classroom instructional strategies, commitment to communication among all stakeholders, evaluation of ongoing programs with respect to rigorous classroom content, the advancement of 21st century learning skills, and a unified method of professional development for all staff. Currently MCASD primarily utilizes professional development and instructional strategies administered by APL Associates. The MCASD curriculum framework is based on a standards aligned system as defined by the Pennsylvania Departmerrnt of Education.

Common Core Standards

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.

The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world, and provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. Consistent standards will provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live. (taken from www.corestandards.org)
